By Andy Rouse
when: Saturday 28th November 2015
where: Deer Park Hall Conference Centre, Near Evesham, Worcestershire
why: To learn from, and be inspired by, top nature photographers
We are pleased to announce the inaugural "Shoot Like a Pro!" Wildlife Photography Conference on Saturday November 28th at the Deer Park Hall Conference Centre, just off the M5 at Evesham. This will be a very different conference from most, here are the reasons why it's an unmissable event:
It's gonna be a top day out and an inspiring one for your photography.
Our Top Line Up of Pros!
The purpose of the day will be to educate and inspire your photography. It will be a day focused entirely on improving your creative vision by seeing how top professional wildlife photographers go about their daily work. Here is the line-up of photographers:
Wildlife ace Andy Rouse
One of the co-founders of FotoBuzz, Andy Rouse is one of the world's most prolific and successful professional wildlife photographers. He has won no less than 22 awards in major international competitions, has published 18 books, is a Canon Explorer and recently presented a film on Grebes for BBC2's Springwatch.
Andy will be giving two presentations. The first will cover making DSLR movies. Andy's talk will give a broad overview of shooting techniques, kit, editing programs and will seek to inspire you to want to shoot movies with your DSLR. His second talk will look at the benefits of working on species in depth, rather than trying to get one shot of every species on the planet. Illustrated with some of his long term projects such as hares, it will be an inspiring talk to end what has hopefully been a highly successful day for you and your photography.
Conservation Photographer Peter Cairns
Peter is a founder and Director of Northshots and has worked as a freelance photographer since 1999. During that time he’s racked up numerous competition awards, co-produced 6 books and initiated projects such as Tooth & Claw, Highland Tiger, Wild Wonders of Europe and 2020VISION. He is a visionary photographer, respected the world over for his dedication to conservation.
Pete's talk will open our conference and he will show how, as wildlife photographers, we can make a real difference to the world around us. The visual image has long since played a central role in how we perceive the world and ultimately perhaps, how we behave as human beings. Visual media shapes our social and cultural values: we believe what we see and more often than not, act upon it. A thoughtful and inspiring start to our conference!
Macro guru Alex Hyde
The best macro photographer of a generation, Alex first came to Andy's attention presenting on the same stage at the Wildphotos Symposium. He has built a career as a specialist macro photographer and teaches regularly on a degree course. His macro style is very modern, coupled with a traditional range of techniques. His images are simply genius.
Starting with foundation techniques such as obtaining sufficient depth of field in your macro pictures, Alex will build up to more advanced setups such as off-camera flash. His talk, entitled "Garden Safari" will show his favourite work and will be packed with hints and tips to improve your macro photography.
Stalking Specialist Neil McIntyre
Neil’s work is widely published and used in many national magazines and newspapers and also by organisations like Scottish Natural Heritage and the John Muir Trust. Over the years Neil has won several awards in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the BWPA. He is known as the professional’s professional, very ethical and true to his principles. For the future his aim is simple, to enjoy, appreciate and be inspired by the wildlife and landscape of Scotland and beyond.
Neil's talk will cover how he uses fieldcraft and stalking techniques to get close to the subjects that he photographs. He is a master stalker and you will be blown away by his images and inspired to try his techniques for yourself. Expect great images of deer, ptarmigan and of course mountain hares.
Nigel is one of the few professionals in the world that makes a living in two different genres of photography. As well as being a superb wildlife photographer he is one of the world's most accomplished aviation photographers. Nigel has been a professional wildlife photographer longer than anyone else at this conference, his images sell worldwide to a loyal network of clients and he continues to evolve his photography.
Nigel's talk will cover his excellence at working in the field with common species such as Starlings and Lapwings. He is an expert on baiting these species to get great wildlife imagery and he will cover remote control photography too. It's a genre that anyone with enough patience can try, and Nigel knows all the tricks to inspire you to have a go!
Urban Specialist Sam Hobson
Sam has built a great reputation in a very short space of time as a specialist in getting the most out of wildlife in urban environments. His images have already won him prizes in all the major wildlife photography competitions including the BBC, GDT, BWPA and Nature's Best. He says that his connection to the natural world has enriched his life, and I am always keen to encourage others to do the same. He hopes that through his work he can inspire others to look around them and appreciate the wild wonders of our planet, from the majestic megafauna to those minute backyard beetles.
Sam's talk will feature his work with the urban foxes of Bristol, giving a fascinating insight into how to start an urban project close to your home.
Photographer and editor Andrew James
Co-founder of FotoBuzz and former Practical Photography editor-in-chief Andrew James has worked in the media as a journalist and photographer for over 26 years. He currently writes and illustrates a monthly Photo Advisor section in the UK’s leading photo mag, Digital Camera, as well running FotoBuzz with Andy Rouse, teaching photography and pursuing his own personal work.
AJ will talk about something he knows about better than anyone else, how amateurs can make money from their work. Want to earn some cash from your love of wildlife photography by selling your images as prints or getting magazines to use them for a fee? AJ will advise you on the tricky areas of editing your images for public sale, choosing printing paper, framing and how to approach venues to get your photos seen.
Flower Guru Carol Sharp
Carol Sharp's images will have been seen by all of you, but you would never know it. Her commissioned work includes two sets of Royal Mail stamps, Chelsea Flower show posters, and packaging work including ranges of juices, herbal teas, food and beauty products for major clients including Waitrose, M&S, Robinsons, Twinings, Highland Spring, Superdrug and Sainsbury’s (the camomile tea photos). She works from an attractive central London studio, but also uses meadows, woodland, wildlife ponds, flower and vegetable gardens that she has created at her home in Norfolk. She is passionate about the importance of plants for the health of people and our planet, and donates a percentage of her income to support education, conservation and awareness of plants and encouraging connection to nature.
Her talk will concentrate on ‘Plant portraits’. She will show how emphasising the features, (or what I call the ‘gesture’ of the plant) with lens choice, focus and depth of field, background and camera position, and finally in post production, will help your images stand head and shoulders above the many snaps of flowers out there. We will look at how using the all important light, your greatest tool, creates a special image. She will also explain how to shoot a specimen indoors using simple set ups in a window to get great results. There will be tips and vital information about plants and how to get the best out of your subject.
Wow what an amazing line up! The best pros in their genre talking in an intimate venue and giving you tons of tips to help with your photography. But wait, that's not all!!!
