Camargue wild horses & flamingos: 5-8 May

May 5, 2022 - May 8, 2022

$190.00

Foto-Buzz is delighted to be able to offer a four-day, action-packed adventure to the south of France to photograph the iconic Camargue horses, as well as beautiful wild flamingos. This is a truly special trip that takes us to Aigues-Mortes, a beautiful walled, medieval city in the heart of the Camargue region. Initial deposit £190. Full cost is £1,900.

With Aigues-Mortes as our base, we will head out a couple of times each day to rendezvous with the Gardians (Camargue Cowboys), who expertly manage the region’s famous ‘white’ horses in the wild and beautiful Camargue countryside. On many occasions we will be shooting in areas the general public cannot reach. When we aren’t concentrating on the unique photography of the horses, then we’ll turn our attention to the stunning flamingos for which the area is also famous. Shoots will be timed for the best chance to enjoy the beautiful Camargue light, and under the expert eye of Foto-Buzz’s own Andrew James, plus our man in the region, Serge, we’ll work hard to ensure you get some spectacular photos. Although we leave the precise itinerary to nearer the time, the trip will include many of the following photo sessions.

The grace, and power of a single white stallion at a beach location

For sheer grace and beauty this single white stallion takes some beating. We’ll photograph him posed static among the sand dunes behind the beach, as well as photograph is power as he runs and rears up on the sand, with the sea and sky as a backdrop. This is a great chance to try some high-key style photography, and pick out the details of what is undoubtedly an absolutely beautiful and impressive animal.

Wild flamingos both wading through the water and flying at the Parc Ornithilogique

The Camargue is home to a huge number of stunning flamingos, and although you will see them when we’re photographing horses, the best opportunity to photograph them is to visit an area where the wild birds come to supplement their feed. You’ll be able to photograph them as they feed in the reed-fringed lakes, as well as try to catch them as they fly in or out of the reserve.

White horses running through the  marshes at sunrise and sunset

These sessions are full-on, adrenalin-charged events. If you’re lucky we’ll start the sessions with some cantering to get your eye in before switching to getting action shots of a group of horses galloping across the open marsh, hooves thundering and water splashing. We’ll arrange for you to shoot the horses at different angles, including ‘into the light’ for some truly memorable photographs.

Reflections in the morning light and horses in the surf

We start the day in tranquil mood, and if the breeze is light or non-existent, we’ll get some superb reflections of chilled horses against a beautifully wild backdrop. But a little later we’ll kick it up a gear with more fast-paced action, including photographing the horses actually in the sea, charging through the surf. If you’re brave, you can be in the sea too!

Fast, furious and feisty sparring stallions

This is a unique opportunity to capture the almost balletic form and shapes created by two stallions rearing up and sparring. You’ll need to be quick and accurate with your focusing on this shoot but the results can be truly magnificent. And never ignore the opportunity to get a portrait of a Camargue Cowboy (or girl) either – and it’s a perfect time to practice your French too.

There is also time between morning and evening sessions to relax, walk around the walled city of Aigues-Mortes taking photos, or enjoy a glass of gris (local rosé wine) at an outdoor café.

The full cost of the trip is £1900. A deposit of £190 secures your spot with the remaining amount to be paid by bank transfer on request in 2022. This price includes your room and breakfast at a hotel in Aigues-Mortes. You will also be provided transport to and from the airport (as long as you are able to arrive with the specified flight), and be driven to and from all locations from the hotel. It also includes access to the Parc Ornithilogique. It does not include your flights, but EasyJet provides inexpensive flights from Gatwick to Montpellier Airport. You will be informed of the correct flights to book both to and from France. If you prefer to arrive earlier, the taxi ride from the airport to Aigues-Mortes is only about 20 minutes. We advise everyone to have their own travel insurance and to be aware of any travel requirements due to Covid 19.
