Yes – they’re a bit ‘waxy’ aren’t they, CB? But that’s how shots from digital cameras were described at the turn of the century, when a 3MP sensor was considered ‘cutting edge’. Considering this tech is in its infancy, and the Bing/Dall-E pic is a 1024px created from a 5-word prompt in a few seconds, the waxiness is likely to recede over time.

Interesting article Jon, and thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. Now for the controversial bit – I prefer the aesthetic of the AI image, even though I know it’s not ‘real’. This is what fascinates me with AI image creation, I was going to use the word photography then, but it’s not photography, is how you can use your imagination to create the type of images you want and create style that suits your taste. Is it as fulfilling as photography? Yes and no. For me anyway. It’s new it’s different, but sometimes doing things the hard way is more satisfying. I won’t be getting rid of my camera any time soon, and I still find film appealing.

That’s an interesting perspective, Shaun, and as an “inspiration generator” you could see what AI comes up with from a text prompt, and if you like what it produces, you could then emulate the results in the real world and create a real photograph based on the aesthetics of the AI image.
It’s a bit like exploring recipes that are based on what you actually have in the fridge!

I really enjoyed your article, Jon. Interesting points about ‘reality’. I will, however, be sticking with my camera!
